INTERNET OF THINGS IN THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION 4.0

Contributor : Syafira Az Zahra

The term of Industrial Revolution 4.0 is now familiar because it is often discussed in various fields of business and industry. The term for the fourth industrial revolution era is the name of the latest data automation and exchange trends in manufacturing or factory technology.

This trend has changed many areas of human life, including the economy, the world of work, even the human lifestyle itself. In short, revolution 4.0 instills intelligent technology that can connect with various fields of human life.

In this industrial revolution 4.0, manufacturing technology has entered the trend of data automation and exchange. These include cyber-physical systems, cloud computing, cognitive computing, and most importantly internet of things (IoT).

What is Internet of Things?

Internet of Things or also known as IoT is a concept where certain objects have the ability to transfer data over the network without the need for interaction from human to human or from humans to computer devices. This technology was discovered by Kevin Ashton in 1999. Until now, IoT technology has been widely developed and applied.

What's the effect in the 4.0 Industrial Revolution?

The Internet of Things is a key element in the 4.0 industrial revolution, therefore IoT has a very close relationship with the industrial revolution 4.0. Iot has a lot of influence in a variety of industries. IoT works to find and collect various data from the field which will be processed into more useful data. Some influential industries are:

    1. Manufacture

In the manufacturing industry, the Internet of Things can be used as a liaison between production machines to run efficiently, besides monitoring the production flow to have better management. The inventory is not spared from IoT disruption, this can provide information disclosure and item flow efficiency.

    2. City Planning (Smart Cities)

City planning is not spared from the disruption of the internet of things, its use is very diverse. Internet of things can be used to monitor public facilities, energy, and even waste management in the city. With the existence of the internet of things, the government can provide better services to the public.

    3. Agriculture

In the future, farmers will not go out again. The internet of things helps agricultural activities, such as monitoring the condition of plants, soil, weather, and smart tractors that are ready to harvest only through smartphones.

    4. Automotive industry

With the internet of things, cars can now have autonomous driving capabilities. It is possible that in the future there will be an exchange of information between cars.

Challenges faced in Internet of Things

The internet of things is of course not present without challenges, various challenges arise due to the presence and implementation of these technologies.

    1. Humans are replaced by machines

With the presence of the internet of things, robots will be more powerful and have the possibility to change the role of humans. This will create a gap in the community.

    2. Data security

As in article 2050: Our Future, data is a very important asset in business. Data can be processed that will provide useful information to humans and the machine itself. Of course, this invites people to try to hack data. Therefore, data security has become a very heavy challenge in the era of industrial revolution 4.0.

    3. Privacy and Ethics

Excessive data mining will cause serious privacy and ethical problems. Especially on the internet of things that are used to monitor personal scope. For example, smart home that uses IoT technology. The voice recognition feature continuously records conversations that are in the room, of course not everyone will be comfortable with that.

Of course, now we have entered the 4.0 industrial revolution which is far different from other industrial revolutions and the Internet of things played an important role in the 4.0 industrial revolution. The main difference compared to the previous three industrial revolutions was the use of highly up-to-date technology. The technology massively changes various industries. Make all industries become data-driven or based on data. All these technological developments present new challenges that must be prepared for the industry. IoT opportunities as an industry optimization are also ready to be enjoyed by the industry. Without the existence of the Internet of things, the 4.0 industrial revolution would not occur.
